I found this article a few years ago and it has remained one of my favorites. It describes so many kids who are great at school and then go home and act like terrors (I was one of those myself!). I have a friend who described this as using up all of her "good" at school and then had nothing left for home. When I ask classrooms of students if this is the case for them, I would say about 90% of hands go up. The kids know they are doing it, but they are just so "done" that they don't know how to stop. Most students have learned calm-down strategies, but when that red zone hits so quickly it's really hard to put those strategies to use. The good news is that we as parents can help manage some of this. This article is worth the read!
