Childhood Trauma

February 7, 2020

This video is worth taking the time to watch. I think it gives a great understanding of where both kids and adults might be coming from.

The YouTube description says: "Childhood trauma isn’t something you just get over as you grow up. Pediatrician Nadine Burke Harris explains that the repeated stress of abuse, neglect and parents struggling with mental health or substance abuse issues has real, tangible effects on the development of the brain. This unfolds across a lifetime, to the point where those who’ve experienced high levels of trauma are at triple the risk for heart disease and lung cancer. An impassioned plea for pediatric medicine to confront the prevention and treatment of trauma, head-on."

What are some of the things we are doing at Sylvan to build resiliency in our students?

  • Mrs. Hoffman teaches weekly social-emotional lessons using research-based curriculums.

  • Miss Ash teaches the Healthy Minds Healthy Bodies program to grades K - 3.

  • Mrs. George, our new Student Affairs Coordinator, is building stronger positive behavior intervention supports (PBIS) into our days.

  • Using restorative practices with all students. (See the link for more info on this - great tips for bringing restorative practices into your home!)

  • Welcoming ALL students and families into our Bobcat family.

  • Building relationships with our students based on trust, safety, and consistency.
